Ever since the miffy museum opened its doors in February 2016, it has been the perfect place for toddlers and pre-schoolers to discover their world. The museum has been set up to reflect the philosophy of Dick Bruna (1927-2017), who aimed to provide children with a safe world where they can go out and explore for themselves. Therefore, the motto of the miffy museum is ‘discover your world with miffy and her friends'.

The museum's design is based on the rationale that humans function according to their memory (Cultuur in de Spiegel, B. van Heusden). Our brains store all of the memories and experiences we collect during our lives, which we then use to interpret, understand and navigate the world. The more memories we have, the more effectively we can navigate. And the sooner we start filling our ‘memory vault,’ the better we can develop into balanced, social and independent people.

‘I don’t want to be prescriptive. I want children to have fun.’ - Dick Bruna (1927-2017)

The miffy museum is designed to give children as many experiences and memories as possible. During their visit, they work on building up and strengthening their memory vault. Children follow their own curiosity through play; the best way for toddlers and pre-schoolers to learn is through direct experience. The role of parents and guardians in this regard is of vital importance: young children learn best in conjunction with those around them.

For this reason, the themed rooms are equipped with analogue, mechanical and sensory interactive displays that provide genuine experiences. The themes have been selected for their cultural value and relatability to children, such as the home, the doctor's practice, the shop and the farm.

The miffy museum guarantees a comprehensive cultural voyage of discovery through miffy's world, which itself is a reflection of the children's own world. They explore their own culture through Dick Bruna's characteristic and beloved artwork. In the miffy museum, children learn about the world with miffy.

The miffy museum has developed various educational programmes for daycare centres, after-school care and preschools, primary schools, and students of Child and Education studies.
